Enough is enough! Veterans are being left behind and purposely discriminated against by VA personnel, both medical and staff. This is a horror story that is backed up by medical records, White House Veterans Hotline, and Congressional inquiries that were dropped because congress person was endorsed by the union at Portland, Or. VA and veteran was not advised of that conflict of interest. Veteran Steven Masone was having pacemaker battery changed on June 17, 2019 at the Portland Oregon VA.
Right before he was completely sedated, the Dr. advised him his potassium was low and they had to administer more through his IV which began to burn ...he called out to stop the operation but staff continued and even incompetently placed blood pressure cuff above the IV! When patient awoke after operation, he headed to bathroom where he passed out from overdose of potassium because the doctors did not not see he was an albuterol user which chases potassium out of the blood serum into the cellular system and all medical protocol calls for a halt to any procedure when albuterol is in medical history and shows low potassium. The patient cracked his head on cement floor and recieved a Traumatic brain Injury and his bed alarm to notify staff when he got out of bed was not turned on. He lay unconcious for some time until he regained conciusness and pulled bathroom alert chain. No EEG or any other brain test was administered and was hurriedly discharged in next morning and became dizzy and was almost hit by another vehicle running a red light. He suffered cognitive decline, migraine headaches vertigo, vision loss and contracted other vision conditions leading to now being legally blind. After some time he researched and found the contra-indicated issue with the potassium and albuterol and found all the notes of the fiasco in operating room had been scrubbed and the congress person inquiry did mot file a freedom of information request.
In 2020 while assisting in the Almeda wildfire in Talent and Phoenix Oregon that destroyed thousands of homes as a PTSD counselor and American Legion Officer to assess and help veterans navigate the FEMA gauntlet. His eyes became injured from the toxic smoke and more vision loss occurred.
The White City VA misdiagnosed him with Wet Macular Degeneration snd told it was untreatable. However, a new treatment came out almost 3 years ago for his later actual Dry Macular Degeneration and he could hve started then, adding up to 45% more sight life slowing the progression.
In 2024 he had cataract surgery go wrong on his left eye at Portland VA also, and developed another untreatable retina condition known as 'Charles Bonnet Syndrome' that further complicated his eyesight and was told the eye needed to be done over, but could not get any date for another surgery. He moved to the Roseburg VA stem in Oregon and could not get a PCP (Primary Care Physician) for 11 months and 20 days. Community Care finally got him into an ophthalmologist who correctly diagnosed his Dry Macular degeneration and started him on the eye shot treatment. He also has a spinal injury that a bullet to T-12 vertebrae has caused him to seek removal by robotic surgery... but VA will not send him to neuro surgeons and is mostly wheel cahair bound as well.
He has re-injured the spinal injury several times from falling due to his declining eyesight. He recieved in Home Care which Portland approved but Roseburg would not contionue because he called White House Hotine and he feels it was in retaliation. He moved to the Puget Sound VA System in Washington and has been met with more resistance and discrimination. Steven Masone Founded a Veterans Emergency Shelter in Eugene Oregon and helped permenantly housed over 1600 Vets into their own housing in cooperation with the VA Hud/Vash Reintegration Pgm. He has been a tireless advocate for ADA Advocacy and is filing a Civil Rights violation and hopes to also see a Class Action suit for all Vets who have had their rights violated also.
